Default Civil-Component Specific XREF's or Not

There has been a recent debate at our firm regarding the use of a single drawing that has both existing conditions and proposed conditions. We will then xref that into each sheet of the drawing package. Some feel that we should use multiple xref's....for example; one for existing conditions, one for proposed storm drains, one for proposed water, one for proposed paving, etc. Most of our projects consist of a work area of 10 to 20 acres. I'd like to get an idea of what others in the civil realm think. Your participation in this poll is most appreciated.

    Generally speaking...

    One DWG for existing.
    One DWG for proposed utilities
One DWG for proposed property lines (the proposed plat)
Possibly another DWG to split out the existing topo from the existing property lines)

Each P&P sheet or index sheet is a blank drawing (MS) with these other 3 or 4 xref-ed in, and the title block in a layout.

    I agree!

This also provides the facility for concurrent work practice by allowing different aspects of the layouts to be worked on at the same time by different personnel.

Just wondering how that works with C3d? The multiple Xrefs that is. I thought that C3d uses one big model for a given work location?

In my case It depends on the size and complexity of the job.

    Cheers

We are not using C3D, but an add-on that does similar things to C3D. I've found that some key features will not work through xrefs. From what I know of C3D, it is probably the case there as well.

What do you mean by one big model for a given work location?

At my last job they were just kicking off a project to design a public sewer system for an entire township. We had an aerial survey company develop a topo map. The resulting file was on the order of 100Mb or more. The plan was to break the topo model into smaller areas based on project phases to get a more workable file size.

I left the company just as the training for C3d started. So I know just enough about C3d to know that I don’t much about C3d.

C3D is just AutoCAD with a few new toys in it. So things like surfaces, pipe networks, alignments, even land parcels are given new functions to make it easier to work with.
So setting up sheets in C3D is very similar to what you're used to. Each x-ref is its own object with its own layers (if you have it set up that way).
In the company I work for, we have many x-refs set up for multiple things; we have one for our site (especially when working with an arch), the utilities, existing topo, etc.
