    Default civil3d point management

...what is the best/most eficient way to manage points in c3d. do we control point styles with description keys or point groups? we have used both and i dont want to waste countless hours with trial and error going in the wrong direction.

It really depends on what you are using the points for and where the points are being generated from. I kind of liked the blended approach. Use Desc Keys when creating the points so blocks and what not get added to them, then use point groups to refine their display.
