I would like to start linking my mechanical schedules to an excel file. I have figured out how to link the two but I keep getting a lot of unwanted cells. How do I link the files so that I only see the cells and corresponding lines to appear?

If you mean you have extra cells at the bottom and side of your schedule you could create a range in your spreadsheet and then when you create your datalink, pick the "Link to named range" option
Or if you want to get rid of the borders around empty cells you go into the table style manager and theres a borders tab where you can pick which borders you want to show or hide
