Default Xref path not working for 2nd computer

I'm in a small office (unfortunately without a dedicated IT guy) and i'm probably the most tech savvy person in the office but my knowledge has been a bit lacking when setting standards.

long story short...i'm new to 2008 and I've been having a lot of problems with XREFS not transferring paths from the computer that created the drawing and other computers in the office.

The way we set up our drawings is by putting all building information on a base drawings and xref'ing that onto all other associated drawings. When there are existing conditions to be dealt with the proposed floor plan consists of additions to the base drawing over the xref etc...

I sometimes xref a drawing containing an xref (i.e. the proposed first floor plan - in order to construct sections etc) and all the information show up fine on my computer. If anyone else i n the office opens my files they sometimes experience a loss of the xref file, showing only the text path where the drawing info should be.

I've also had some difficulty when using files from previous versions of autocad. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with a similar problem.

Are you using full, relative, or no path?
The 2nd computer must have access to whatever path is saved.

Also be sure the network drives are mapped to the same letter on each machine. As for problems opening older DWG versions, I haven't had that problem yet. Is it possible one or both machines have a bad install on them? Do you access to the disc to reinstall?

how do you distinguish between absolute and relative xrefs?

I didn't even know there were relative xrefs...
we all use a central server, but i'll check on the drive letters.

second computer seems to be mapped to a different drive letter. my computer refers to the server as "z" and my coworker's refers to the server as "s" I'm not sure if this would be enough to cause the issue, but I'm not sure how to get our computers to refer to the server as the same name (disk management doesn't seem to work for network drives)

i'm trying to think of the best way to do this with the least amount of confusion. my coworker that works on that computer has been xreffing things on her computer just as I have on mine. What i'm afraid of is that if we somehow synch our computers then the projects with associated xrefs on the computer that changes it's name for the server will then have unconnected xrefs.

Yes, I think that would cause the problem.

When you map to the server, you should be able to select a drive letter.

Relative Xref paths should take care of that, shouldn't it?

It's not really a huge deal about the computers not being completely synched...it's frustrating. not sure how to change the network mapping at this point and i can't seem to figure out how to do a relative xref on my version ( 2008 )

well. even changing the path doesn't seem to work. for some reason everything contained within the details part of my xref bar is greyed out and unable to be edited. i wish i had the xref menu from 2005. why do they always change things?!?!?!??!?!

    http://www.archidigm.com/lounge/auto...utocad2004.htm

that's similar to what i'm used to and then they give me a crippled version in return (see attachement)

    am i missing something?

You cannot change the path of the current drawing (which is what you have highlighted in that screen capture)

    Try the ._CLASSICXREF command.

More eye candy to attract new users.
