    Default ESRI .SHP file import

I think this started with R2008 but not sure, but when I import .SHP files, my layers and object data are being appended with "Default_". Anyone know where the preference is to turn that off? Also would like to change objects to "bylayer".

There is no variable to set to prevent that from happening.

And I suppose despite this being a "new bug", it won't be fixed until next version? Well, I will be interested to hear if it is fixed in R2009, but considering that we are still transitioning to R2008, I expect we will be skipping that one. Hate to have to wait another year and half or so to fix a minor problem. I am using this more and more and it's a real pain.

In 2009 it is back to normal and does not have the "Default_" as the prefix. Also the object colors properties is back to by-layer.

When bringing over the .shp files - is there a way to bring the annotations with them? I've been through the archived postings - but am not coming up with an answer.

Yes, it takes 2 steps, first you import, then query with alter properties. Check out the help and tutorials. A little tricky but not bad.
