    Lightbulb CAD & MEP Workspaces

    Okay have a question....

We are currently using AutoCAD MEP 2008 set up as AutoCAD 2008. And before I try my idea I wanted to see if anyone has tried this before:

First I'll open AutoCAD MEP 2008 and Save As the CUI to a different file, different name.

Then I open the AutoCAD 2008 set up, go into the CUI, and import the MEP Workspaces.

Will it bring in all of the MEP Workspaces and Toolbars etc.?

What I'm trying to achieve is a 2D AutoCAD Workspace for my 2D work. And when necessary I can open a drawing from an architect, switch the Workspace to a MEP Workspace to work on that drawing and then switch back when I'm done.

Right now I have 2 different Desktop Icons for opening AutoCAD and AutoCAD MEP.

chirp chirp (is that how a cricket sounds in cyber space?)

I'm not sure it's even possible to import the MEP tools and such into vanilla cad, is it? I run ACA, and it has architectural tools, then all the 2D tools from vanilla Cad. I bet it's simpler to import the vanilla cad profile into MEP rather than the other way around. Just a thought.

We are currently using AutoCAD MEP 2008 set up as AutoCAD 2008... all I did was edit the target path in the icon to have it open as:

    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\acad.exe" /ld "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\AecBase.dbx" /p "AutoCAD"
As opposed to the standard AutoCAD MEP 2008 target path of:

    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\acad.exe" /ld "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\AecBase.dbx" /p "AutoCAD MEP (US Imperial)"
Which is why I was thinking I could just import from one to the other since it is really still MEP just with different Workspaces.... I THINK

OOOOhhhhhh okay. I thought you had 2 versions running. Well, I'm with you. It should work. I guess you'll have to be the guinea pig and let us know! JUST DO IT!!!!

What you are doing is opening up MEP with different profiles. The profile loads more than just the workspaces it also loads the arx files and tells AMEP where to find the MEP libraries, tools etc.

I'm sure you could load the MEP and vanilla CAD tool palettes at the same time and have them change via the workspace but I haven't tried it.. I would guess the easiest way would be to open AMEP as AMEP and add the AutoCAD pallets via the CUI.

If I have time later today I'll play with it and see if I can get it to work.

Let us know if you get this to work

I would honestly do it via CUI. Have a MEP CUI and a ACAD CUI, then have two different profiles, a acad profile(uses acad cui), and MEP profile(uses MEP profil). Then have two different shortcuts for each profile.

That sounds like the way I'm planning on doing it.

But now the 1st trick is to find time to do it

That's exactly what the switches in your response number 4 are doing.

    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\acad.exe" /ld "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\AecBase.dbx" /p "AutoCAD"

Opens MEP with an AutoCAD profile and

    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\acad.exe" /ld "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD MEP 2008\AecBase.dbx" /p "AutoCAD MEP (US Imperial)"

opens MEP with an MEP profile.

Yeah that part I understand I mistyped in my previous post. I already have 2 shortcuts to open each profile.

What I want is one profile (AutoCAD Profile) to always be working in, and to be able to access the MEP Profile's toolbars and workspaces while in it.

    So my plan is:
    • Open AutoCAD MEP (US Imperial) and open the CUI.
    • Save the MEP CUI somewhere under a different name and close the MEP Profile
    • Open AutoCAD (my vanilla version) and open the CUI.
    • Import the Toolbars and Workspaces from the MEP Profile CUI
    • Save the new CUI as my CUSTOM CUI.
So IF that all works as planned then when I open AutoCAD I will now have a hybrid CUI of my AutoCAD Vanilla and MEP tools.....

    I think that's it?
