Default Revit and the Building Lifecycle

I'd like to get some feedback on how far everyone is using the Revit model through the entire building process including facilities management. Is this possible on smaller projects without the resources to go to a full-blown solution like FM Desktop? We are interested in developing an in-house solution that would allow our clients to use the full potential of the Revit model throughout the entire building lifecycle. What are some more affordable solutions? Can this be accomplished with Revit alone? Can it be done by using the entire Revit suite (Building, Structure and MEP) or do we require additional software? As we work with our subcontractors on this it seems like Revit Structure is ready for prime time, but MEP is not, so I'm not even sure Revit is currently strong enough to get us part way there. Any ideas or case studies would be appreciated.

    Steve,

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Wide scale facilities management likely isn't a good application for Revit alone, but CAN you use it for FM? Yes. From storing warranty info to performing space planning tasks, Revit has the data that can be used for such things even if it wasn't specifically designed to accomplish the task.

Ultimately its not designed to be a FM program, but it can be a storage/scheduling device for FM type information. What would you like the software to do? If you can quantify the tasks you are looking to perform then we can provide you with better advice toward how Revit (all flavors) can (or can not) be used as an effective solution for your firm.
