But, in all honesty, you ought to be placing your own customizations in a folder of your choice, and then just adding that folder to the top of your AutoCAD support folders in Options, Files.
Definately! Otherwise you have to redo all the LSP and CUI customizations after an upgrade. Each time you install a new version that path changes (at least the <version> subfolder).

The trick is to create a folder like C:\MyAcadCustom\, then add it to the ACad support paths. And to make sure your own acad.lsp & acaddoc.lsp is loaded instead of any other, move it to the top of the support path list.

Consider that if I get a new computer, my IT department will copy over the
document and settings folder as part of a profile transfer. Anything I put
    there will never get lost.

It won't be lost if your IT department does a good job. The problem is that a new version of AC will have a separate folder structure for all those settings, support path, plotter setups, plot styles, toolpalettes, etc. If you use the migrate option when upgrading, these aren't copied to the new folders - the paths are simply added to AC. Which sometimes cause huge problems - especially when you still use the old version.

As long as you don't modify any standard files you could theoretically fix any problem. Just remember to keep a backup copy of all your own customizations (AC has the nagging ability to "modify" them as it sees fit - especially CUI files). Having a folder for your own addons just makes your life simpler - if you want it under Documents and Settings, create one under My Documents: it's easier to get at & still underneath the Docs&Sets. DON'T put your CUI's here, I'd also suggest not placing your ACAD.LSP / ACADDOC.LSP files here as these could be version specific. But definately all other LSP, DVB, PAT, etc. files are ripe to be placed here.

    Hello AUGI Members,

Is there a way to turn off the migration option when AutoCAD 2009 is installed and start with a clean slate....??

    Regards,
    Vince

I dont know if there is a way to shut it off, but you can always click cancel and it will allow you to start with a clean slate. It may be an option to install or not install the migration tool. It's been 8 to 9 months since I installed AutoCAD last, so I cant remember. Check the custom installation options and see if you can just not install the "Migrate Custom Settings"

I don't think I have ever used any of the migration aids so you must be able to turn it off.

I think it can be excluded during the install and/or when building a deployment, the same as excluding materials or alternate language spelling dictionaries.
