Then what is the point of even using the OOTB CUI file? Right now all that im doing is customizing which toolbars, ribbon items, pulldowns, ect. i want to use from the OOTB CUI file. I been to scared to even waste the time making my own custom ribbon items, toolbars, and pulldowns. If the OOTB stuff doesn't work right why would i think custom CUI would be any better?

If you doing that much modification to the OOTB files, then that is what you have to live with. At our firm, there isn't anything from the OOTB files that we even remove. However, if there was a toolbar button or menu item that I did not want showing, I would transfer that toolbar/menu to my own CUI, perform the tweaks, and use my version of the UI item in the workspaces instead of the OOTB version.

    Hey Robert,

After having another fowl up with my .cui file, I decided it was time to make my own to use (basically just a copy of MEP.cui, but saved in a different location). However, when I chose to load my cui through Options>Files, some of the buttons on the toolbars change to clouds with question marks in the middle (I assume it's the defualt "we can't find your stupid icon" icon). Most of the icons that go missing seem to be MEP specific buttons, and it doesn't matter if I create a new cui through the CUI Window, or if I just copy and rename the MEP.cui using Explorer.

Any idea on how to make a custom cui while retaining the icons?

You need to copy the resource .dlls and rename them to match the new CUI filenames.

Well today my CUI file lost all of the OOTB ribbon tabs. I think its an issue with those ribbon tabs that show up when you do a certain command that enables a temporary ribbon tab. ( example the Refedit ribbon tab & block editor ribbon tab) It seems that when those dont go away after you finsh the command it corrupts the CUI file.
