    You mean something like SolidWorks?

I've also heard the rumor, but I'm also of the opinion that it's a rumor. What might happen is that Revit / AutoCAD might converge - bringing the best from both into one package: I.e. the general BIM drawing though a Revit like interface - while allowing AutoCAD like commands for that linework.

But hang on ... isn't something like ACA (or other) exactly that, just from the AutoCAD base instead of the Revit base?

I believe what the rumors are talking about is that vanilla AutoCAD will cease to exist. They have so many specialized versions that one of them will usually apply to us. I, for one, don't need a specialized version as far as I know. I just do millwork detailing.

Parametrically modelling an entire refinery? The hardware expenses alone would be horrendous. We do just fine with basic AutoCAD with some add-ons.

I've been hearing these "rumors" on and off over quite a few years and nothing has ever come of them. Does anybody have any data relating to the number of "plain" AutoCAD seats sold, vs. some of the discipline specific verticals?

Please let me know if you have heard the same thing, or have any real proof that this will happen.

    Thanks,

For me it doesn't matter phase out on 2010 important for us is mastering AutoCAD.

The company I work for is planning to phase AutoCAD out of the picture entirely by the year 2009... I know of quite a few other companies doing the same thing. They're all going to either Revit or another BIM platform.

If too many companies go that direction, I think AutoCAD will be a thing of the past simply due to supply & demand.

Most of my work for clients could jus as easily be done in (pick your favourite release).
Let's be generous and say A2002.

It has to be a rumor.

Yes, many are moving to BIM and Parametric Modeling.

The bottom line is there is still a demand for 2D AutoCAD. If Autodesk doesn't support that need (even if it might not be as big of a revenue generator) someone else will. I can't see Autodesk wanting to give up any market share to anyone.

Thanks for the opinions. I was able to get the following "official" response through subscription:

'I understand you have heard a rumor that AutoCAD is getting discontinued.
This is like an urban myth that will not go away. There is no truth to it. Period.
Rest assured AutoCAD is so entrenched that it will never "go away". '

Best Wishes on continued use of AtuoCAD, Revit, Inventor, etc.

    Jeff

Still drawing with lines? How quaint...

Sorry, couldn't resist. After seeing a 30% productivity boost on Revit projects over CAD, I've ceased being sympathetic about claims that AutoCAD is faster...

I also doubt AutoCAD will ever vanish, though I sincerely wish it would so Autodesk's programming resources would be more focused...
