Redline mode

Peter J would probably find this one useful, as would my boss. If we could enter a redline mode, where nothing in the model, sheets, views etc could be edited - and you could add notes, sketches, etc etc all very rough and freehand over the top of any view. Any views that had been Redlined would appear in red in the project browser.

When you come out of redline mode, all redline will dissapear until you go into that mode. if it were assigned to say "F5" or something, you could flick it off and on in the view to check you had addressed all comments.

I would use this myself to add notes and comments as I worked, as well using it to get comments from others involoved in the project. Would be really useful......

This is a good idea, Martin. Although a text style can also be given which appears in red and with a little thought about subcategories we might be able to switch it on and off at will. Can you assign F keys in the keyboard shortcuts file?

I use a kind of notes too self font and linestyle at the moment, the main thing I would like would be for it to be completely separate/isolated from the model and views. That way you can scribble away to your hearts content withut worrying about your detail stuff being interferred with, or snapping to your redline etc - and you also scribble on schedules, 3d views etc etc which you cannot at the moment, unless on a sheet. And more to the point my boss could scribble away without messing up views as he has a very basic knowledge of revit. This way anyone could go into a model, hit redline mode, and that is all they need to understand to mark up a drawing. (other than how to access different views) at the moment he prints stuff out at marks that up, but they always seem to end up getting lost

Worksets?

The only set you allow them to access is one for notes, you can switch it on or off in visibilitty and delete the notes as you implement them becasue you have access to everything.

I use a text style with the color red and the other option that I thought of is to create a workset called redline, you plan reviewer uses this worksets, you keep control over all the other worksets, then you can turn on and off his/her redlines as needed.

Hmmmmm. Problem is I dont know how to use 'em ops: keep meaning to have a look, just dont get the time. Better make some by the sounds of it.

I like the idea that a viewname turns red in the browser until redmarks are recinded...interesting collaboration/checking concept Martin.

Perhaps the Revit team should look more closely at creating a tool to permit this function native to revit rather than the dwf/voloview concept available to us now.

Till then the workset notion with text style could deliver good results. Nice thinking guys!

I like the idea that it would just flick on and off with the press of a single key, it would certainly clean up my desk and save a bunch of trees and time.

Another "layer" that can be added to this redline-functionality would be the capability to create "users" with assigned colors, the boss would be red and CAD-boy/girl (Sorry, BIM-boy/girl) would be yellow, to tick off redlines. Similar to color-fill, but this will be "line/text-fill", everything by one user would be one color with a little legend on the side to make things easy (a floating, always on top pop-up perhaps). Also it would be great if on that same legend the users visibility could be switched on or off, but the single f-key override should remain.

Having unlimited users a second revision and tick-off can have separate colors or the old ones gcould be changed to shades of gray, making the revision process so much easier, afterall is revit not about "change management"?.

Thanks to those who have suggested work-arounds using worksets ect. They all are good hacks and support that fact tat this would be a usefull feature. However I think it should be easy to use, keeping those older "bosses" out there in mind.

I really like this idea....

Now, a step further....like Revit demo mode, create a Revit Redline "freebie" version. The redline tools are available, while all other functions (walls, windows, doors etc) are locked. In Redline mode, one can open the file, add notes, mark it up, measure distances, etc. Then Redline mode also allows print and save. Then when a 'redlined' file is opened in full version of Revit, the redlines can be toggled on or off!
