    Default Construction Admin. Drawings

We are heading into CA with our first Revit project. It's fairly large and complex (139 48x30 Architectural sheets) so we've learned quite a bit about Revit since this project started started over a year ago. For those of you that are regulars, Aaron Rumple was our instructor.

Anyway, I have a few ideas for how to go about this but I thought I would get some input. We will most certainly be issuing addenda drawings during bidding and issuing change and clarification drawings during construction. Issuing full sheets would be easy from Revit's perspective but inevitably we will be producing 8.5 x 11's and 11 x 17's.

I suspect we will use design options to deal with proposed design changes and alternatives.

The main question is how to deal with views or duplicate views for use on the small format title blocks since a view can only be placed once?

What if there is detailing in the views?

If I am revising a detail and I place it on a small sheet, it needs to have the same number as the original detail like 9/A-301.

Although it is not very Revit like, I am thinking about making the revisions, annotating the changes with revision clouds on the original sheets, and exporting images of the changed areas and composing them on sheets using Page Maker or something like that.

How is everyone handling this issue?

BTW, this project has been a success and we are moving forward with Revit on at least 4 new projects. If anyone wants to join us in Indianapolis or Champaign, IL, let me know.

This is a good point, Larry.

Let's say detail 9 on A-301 gets changed. A-301 was originally a large sheet; the new detail is going to go out on a letter size sheet.

Will A-301 with the new version of the detail on it ever get reprinted? If NOT, then you could remove the detail from the sheet and place it on a letter size titleblock, where it will stay for the rest of the project's duration.

If page A-301 DOES get reprinted, you could leave the area where the changed detail used to reside blank, with a note saying "See Revised Detail from Addendum 2, etc...." Or, you could one-off print the new detail on a letter/tabloid sheet, then move it back to A3-01 after the addendum has been issued. Keep a PDF or DWF of the smaller format detail for record purposes.

    Wes, thanks for the response.

I think we will experiment with this for a little while and see what works best. I am not sure that it is safe to assume that the original full size sheets will not need to be re-issued in their entirety. In fact, on some jobs we will issue "construction sets" that incorporate all revisions from the bid phase. Internally, our Project Architects like to use the full size sheets (.PDF's) as their on line drawing set. Plus, I think what you suggest will change the detail number and all references throughout the set.

After thinking a little more about this, I think we will head the following direction:

    1. Make all permanent revisions in Revit and make revision notation on the plot sheets.
1a. Design options will be used for revisions that are not necessarily final.

    2. Print the revised sheets to .pdf. to keep our on line CD set up to date.

    3. Use PageMaker to compose the official small format revision documents by placing the .pdf's and cropping to the revised details.

I still hope to hear how others are handling this issue.

    Thank you,

So how did the CD's go Larry? We've had similar issues, right now we're redesigning a 100 sheet set to slim down a project and get it under budget. Of course we suspect the client may find the money once we get done with all the revisions.

I like the page maker idea. Our firm is standardizing on PDF for everything and I'm trying to get all record sets headed this direction. My thought was to make a header footer and form in PDF. Then we can print what we need from the project and compose the final in acrobat.

On smaller projects we just make the changes in the main project. Phases and Design options still confuse some of the users.
