I've done a similar counter for an ice cream shop and I used walls for the different materials. I created levels for toe kick, top of casework and top of counter. I made several different wall types for the different materials (P lam, metal, solid surface, MDF, etc). The downside is that you don't get the graphic visibility potential of using casework or generic in place families.
You tell Revit which objects voids cut specifically. They don't automatically cut through another solid...unless it is joined with something you did tell Revit to cut.Originally Posted by rlwade.68242
The entire reception counter is one family so when I create a void it cuts through all solids in the family that it touches.
I guess I was imagining the two elements that I colored (blue and green) to be separate solids cut with individual voids...it would work in that scenario...

Next to the Join Geometry button is the unjoin button. It's been awhile, but if I remember correctly, the void by default cuts everything. However, if you use the unjoin button you can instruct the void to "uncut" things you pick.
I'm quite convinced it is possible to "uncut", just not positive if I'm sending you the right direction with the unjoin button or not.
Are the voids inside the family too?Originally Posted by rlwade.68242
In the tools dropdown There is a pick for "dont cut geometry" you can have a void not cutting a solid by using this.
