That's what I expected but, on my machine, both files open acadiso.lin.

I have reloaded the linetypes before but that did not seem to help. Plus in their original xref they have some unusal names for the hidden linetype. I had assumed it was just because they were embedded in their own xrefs before they bound the files and sent them to us. Now here is the funny thing. If I set the linetype of my line to the weirdly named hidden linetype, it shows perfectly. The appearance in the linetype manager is also different.

That's your answer then. The same linetype doesn't show differently, two similar but different linetypes (edit - with the same name) show differently. ~smiles all round~

Hold on one second. The files I uploaded, I made both with the same linetype. I purged all the others.

and, if you insert one into the other (drawing), both lines are the same.

I think you had two different linetype definitions each with the same name.

Okay so how did the crazy named linetype name change?

That is it exactly. If you reload the linetypes in both drawings from the same LIN file and tell it to overwrite they will be the same.

Someone either loaded a linetype definition with that name or renamed the linetype in the drawing.

Most likely the Hidden linetype definition in their-file was loaded while MEASUREMENT was set to 0 (imperial). When MEASUREMENT is set to 0 it reads the acad.lin file by default and when its set to 1 (metric) it reads the acadiso.lin file by default.

Even without reloading - insert one into the other and they become the same - either way round.
So the first definition (the first drawing opened) wins.
