Default Commands w/ dialogue box don't work

    Hi folks,
Whenever I type a command that prompts a dialogue box in AutoCAD (version 2006) like "xref" for example I get nothing. Commands don't respond.

I would have to exit autocad and restart to be able to get dialogue box commands to work, how can I fix this???

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Check your variables:
    CMDDIA
    FILEDIA

They should be on 1, maybe you have some program (lisp) setting these to zero?
Or maybe you're canceling out of a custom routine before it resets them?

Or it could be something else....

I dunno then... sounds like a bigger problem that's over my head.

Is this a new install of AutoCAD?
Did you load or install something new related to AutoCAD?

    Try prefixing the command with
    1) period > .xref
    2) tilde > ~xref
    3) dash > -xref

Do any of those make a difference?
