    Default Revit Architecture Wall Insets

Does anyone know if you can create an inset in a portion of a wall? I have a wall that is supposed to be set back 8" at every window. I can't figure it out.

You could either create it as a void cutting the wall (part of the window family) or just a wall based void. In the family just create the void and make sure it cuts the wall. You can add parameters to it to control the depth. If doing it in the window family, you should delete the actual window opening and replace of with a void because you can't have an opening and a void cutting the wall at the same time.

You can embed walls, so I just make multiple wall types, then draw them overtop of each other, then use the cut geometry tool to embed the one wall into the other.

    Andre,

In using this method, does the wall know to wrap materials around behind the inset? That way the finish material is still visible, rather than being cut and showing the structure beyond.

If you go to your wall's properties > Edit/New > and change Wrapping at Inserts to be Exterior or both (depending on what you want), the finish will wrap exactly where the void is cutting the wall (in plan). You can then use the paint bucket to paint the material in 3D.

But depending on the depth of the inset, it may be hard to control the finishes and then using Scott Browns idea of building another wall and embedd them would be better.

    on controling material returns:

In the window family, you can add up to two Reference Planes (one for interior and one for exterior), select them and check "wall closure" in properties - this will allow you to control how deep the materials return into the wall. You can even add dimensions and control this via parameters.
