Default Barn Siding - Board & Batten

We're disappointed with the rendering results using mapping for the siding. No shadows or highlights. I'm almost ready to model an array around a smallish house, but am a little scared off by the prospect of having to cut through everything for windows & doors, and then trimming at the roof line. And so on.

I'm soliciting ideas, offering Class A Wachovia stock in return. Or a bag of jelly beans. Or my sincerest gratitude. Whatever.

    Thanks.

I've used the curtain wall tool for board and batten siding on a few projects and it works pretty well. Just set the panel to 'empty', and define the size and spacing of the vertical mullion as your batten.

You could also create a profile, that defines what to cut of the wall, and use: Modelling>Wall Reveal - Or if it´s horizontal siding, you can add a bunch of reveals at the wall properties menu.

muttlieb, So do you have (2) separate walls then?

Yes, a basic wall representing the framing and finish except for battens, and a curtain wall that only includes the battens.

Use "Join Geometry" on the adjacent walls. Windows, doors, etc. that are hosted by the main wall will also cut the battens.

Actually, you have to edit the profile of the curtain wall and cut around the openings. Sorry I left that part out! Yeah, it can be tedious, and I would only use this method if you absolutely need it for a rendering.

I have simply been using vertical wall sweeps from a batten profile which has allowed me to quickly put window surround battens in place also. Admittedly this has been for a couple of small poolhouse pavilions and a farm shed so they didnt take too mcuh time to array and place. The battens automatically stop and start either side of the window as if cut also.

I like the curtain wall and join geometry idea and I can maybe still place wall sweeps around the windows - if it wasnt worth building them into the window families of course.
