Question Parcel Labels with Expression problems

I have labeled a parcel using an expression which forces the bearing to be north.
The label works fine in the original drawing but when I xref that drawing into the base drawing the bearings read out as decimal degrees instead of dd.mmss format.
I have checked the ambient settings, I made sure that both the line label style and the expression are in the base drawing. I have checked the "units" command.
    What the heck's going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

Have you checked the settings in the drawing your are xrefing into?

What happens if you open your original drawing, save as to a new name, erase everything in it and then xref your original drawing into that?
