Default UVW Mapping on Imported Sketchup Model + RPC shadows

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping for some help on the mapping of materials on an imported Sketchup model. For reasons beyond my control, we were asked to model a building in Sketchup and Render it in Revit. I'm not coming in to find out why I should be modelling all in Revit all the time from the start. That I know. We are were we are.

So, I have an imported sketchup model with the geometry on layers by the material. I've used the imported object style to assign MR materials to the model. It looks great from far. As I get closer and I can see the material patterns, I notice that the brick is horizontal on one face and around the corner it's vertical.

I read some posts that explain this happens on Revit walls when you edit profiles or flip walls. This is not the case for me.

Since I didn't create the geometry in Revit I have no real control over it, as far as I an tell.

I tried making sure that each material had a surface pattern. Or was that supposed to be model pattern? What am I looking for here.

If I try to UVW map in sketchup, I can't get materials in Revit. The faces in Sketchup actually have no material assigned and only show a colour by layer.

Any help? I need to save this model since I didn't realize this was a problem until I had it all modeled and entourage placed.

    Thanks.

    Oh, and the RPC shadows.

Do I turn the arrow on the base of the RPC object toward the light to get the shadow? It's rendering as a thin shadow line.

Do you have 3dsMax? I'd try that instead of Revit.
Much better control of lighting, material mapping, etc.
    And better, faster rendering ability.

We did have an issue with mapping a stone material
recently--it mapped horizontally on some walls and then vertically
on a family. Never did figure it out.

How big/cpmlex is the model? You could always convert faces to Revit
and apply materials to walls, roofs, etc. If budget/schedule allow?

The RPC's should automatically cast shadows according to Revit's Sun settings.
Never had this be a problem.

Good luck. (this is why we switched from SD modeling in SU to Revit!!!)

    I wish we had 3dsmax... a lot.

I'm in the situation I'm in with the software we're using. Sketchup and Revit. I can't do anything about that.

All the materials in question have a surface pattern assigned. It looks like it's going to have to be resolved in Sketchup.

I suppose that I could take the model into ACAD then into Revit. Or does ADA have Vizrender in it?

Can I assign Revit MR materials to layers the same way for CAD models?

bump. I have to deliver on Monday. I was hoping that someone had some leads today.

    Thanks.

I think the only way you're going to be able to control the surface patterns is if they are assigned to native Revit geometry. AFAIK, you won't be able to control the surface patterns on imported SU models. The only thing I can think of is to create a duplicate Revit material with a 90 degree material rotation, and then create a different layer in SU for the surface you need the rotation. But if the patterns don't line up at say, a corner, you're out of luck.

    Thanks,

    That should have been obvious.
I was stumped when I couldn't get ahold of any individual faces in Revit.
