Unhappy Sheet Set: Multiple DWG Files

Im curious if anyone else has come across this, and if they handled it with Sheet Set or said, no way, cant happen, forget it.

I came from a company that used sheet set religiously on every job due to having 40+ sheets that changed alot, so it made it easy to handle info on them with fields, etc.

I am now at a location that uses individual drawing files that also have to retain the same drawing name and stay consistent through various jobs located in different folders.

Is there a way to use sheet set to do this? Or do all the drawings have to be in layout tabs on one DWG to correctly utilize sheet set.

SSM can use a Layout Tab from any drawing as part of a Sheet Set. Only restriction is the Layout can't be part of two different Sheet Sets.

The real beauty of SSM is that it can truly accommodate whatever combination of DWG's you throw at it. My firm is a pretty heavy user of SSM, and we generally use the family structure when setting up sheets. A civil firm, we have a DWG with a series of layout tabs for each our layout, utilities, grading, etc. Each of these families represent a single DWG with multiple layout tabs.

However you choose to structure your sheet files, you just want to do your best to keep to Autodesk's recommendation of having no more than 10 layout tabs in a given DWG. You'll certainly want to keep it below that number if you're using something like Civil 3D.
