Default Site Grading drawings with linked site file

I'm working in a project with the building and site as separate, shared file. This is the first time I (and our office) has attempted this method. It seems to be working well, but I have one question:

How can I label the toposurface contour lines in my building file, which is where all documentation will be? I can place spot elevation marks in my building model just fine, and it displays the correct actual elevation of the topography in the linked site file. But if I try to use contour labels, it says there is no contour there to label.

Am I going to have to resort to having the contour labels in the linked file and hope that they show up in my building file?

Yes, just ensure you have a view in the Site file named with the labels showing (so that you can remember it in the building file). Then link the Site back into the Building file Then in the view(s) of the Building File where you want the contours to show, under View Graphic Overrides, edit the linked site file, set it to Custom view, and set the view name there to be the one where the labels appear, and set the view depth under that to be by linked file. The labels should be visible after exiting out. These settings can be controled via the View Templates.

Yeah I ended up doing that. I actually have my site grading plan to have the linked model's V/G set by the linked site plan view. Then in the site's site plan view, I have the building link V/G set by my site grading plan. So the view in both files looks exactly the same when everything is updated.
