Cool Formulas (Text to Family Parameter)

I was wondering if there is a way to define a Family Type definition based on a text string.

I want to use a parameter to test against a Y/N value to the selection of a <Family Type> Selection. I have a text string test that works, but I can't figure a way to pass the text string value to the Family Type selection.

This would be rather cool, if we could do that.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure I follow what your asking, but a way to process, build text values in families would be very helpful to our company and me in particular since I'm the "Revit guy". Not currently possible though.

The only thing I know that Y/N conditions can be used for in Revit families are visibility settings. If x conditions exists, show or turn off y object, if not do nothing.

For example if a Window width or height gets to a certain length, show muntins.

Please clarify your intent I might be assuming the wrong thing here.

I am trying to figure out if I can have a check box in the family parameter actually define the Family Type selection. I really want to use the check boxes. The check boxes set the leaf style type correctly. Now all I need is for it to also graphically change the Family Type parameter.

I don't think this can be done. What do you think?

    Sincerely,

You can have a yes/ no check box turn things off an on in the family but it becomes very difficult (long formulas) to have it cycle through more than 2 objects. We had doors that changed based on a numerical panel type. That number was used in several other formulas to determine the size and location of openings along with whether it was glazing or louvers... In the end I had to many problems with the formulas and went to a family type parameter with drop downs.

FYI family type parameters, text and material parameters cannot be used in formulas. So if you go family type you have to rely on people picking the correct one from a list, but it does change the actual 3d panel along with all of its attributes....

If I understand correctly, you might be looking at it from the wrong direction. You can have the type selection select a check box or a nested family when you change types. For instance, you have a table with 3 leaf styles defined. Therefore you would create 3 types within your family and have either check boxes to turn off the leaf styles you don't want to see. or you have a family parameter that picks the leaf type defined by you prior using it in a project. Does that make sense?
