How is the overall performance of Windows 7 vs Vista ?
Just saw this on my favourite web comic XKCD: Makes quite a good point, even if it is slightly off topic.
I've been running Revit x64 on Windows 7 x64 and everything seems to be working swell. I haven't put it to the screws yet to see how much of a difference there is.
I've actually installed all of my programs in Windows 7 without a single hitch - everything is running fine. The OS is a lot faster than Vista too. Awesome.
I have been testing Windows 7 (32 bit) and find it to be very stable/good performance. I just replaced the 32 bit install with the 64 bit this weekend it it runs very well with Revit 64 bit.
If you are interested in testing, here is a link to download and get your own license. The download is only available until Jan 24 and the license expires in Aug 2009.

Recieved an email yesterday from Microsoft saying;
"Download the beta before February 10th, to get a firsthand look at what's new or take a sneak peek at what's coming and watch the videos."
I tried the Windows 7 beta, couldn't get rid of it faast enough.
My machine was originally made with Vista pre-installed, I then setup dual booting into XP Pro.
The RAM usage differences between the two systems was quite large. After all startup apps started and system settled vista was into the 1.2Gb mark (no Aero, 1.35Gb with Aero), Xp is around 570Mb.
After installing Windows 7 x64 there was a slight improvement on the mem usage with Aero, a touch under 1.1Gb, mind you this was not with all startup apps installed yet, I couldn't get past all the crashes with Win 7. So I dumped it quickly and reinstalled Win XP (32 bit only).
My machine is a 4Gb system so without the 64 bit I loose access to about 0.5Gb of mem on XP but when you look at the fact that the 0.5Gb is eaten up by the OS anyway there is no point.
I tried XP x64 but too many driver problems and not refined enough for me.
Another gripe with VISTA and WIN 7 is the processor usage was always up and down on idle. 5%, then 30%, sometimes VISTA hangs around 70-80% so the machine was always running hot and the fans pumping away, XP hovers at 2-5% processor usage and stays cool.
Maybe they'll get it right with Windows 8.
