This was a question submitted in this thread a long time ago, but finally it yielded two solutions: one by David Fannon in this post (and illustrated by Phil Read in this other post) and another one by vmmscertpro in yet another post.

I remember reading how to do this in a post by Irwin, one of the Revit founders, in response to this thread (btw, there are a lot of goodies in there!).
I recently got a message from bulletproofdesign who suggested this same tip. In his own words:
If you want to select a partial chain of lines/walls...
1. Click one end of your desired chain.
2. Hover over and <tab> the last segment.
3. Click the segment, and voila.
note. It depends on which end of the last segment you hover over as to which chain is selected. Once you have pressed <tab> once, you can move the mouse to either end to make your selection. the second time you press <tab>, the entire chain is selected as usual.
