Filter Icon @ bottom of Interface?

Does anyone know what this icon does? It looks like the filter icon. I can't get it to do anything.

It is a copy of the filter button that appears on the toolbars. The number you see is a total count of the items selected. It doesn't 'do' anything it just reports info. If you click on it then the filter dialogue comes up.

And like the button on the Option bar, it will only open the dialog if you've got something selected when you click it. It never gets greyed out like the other button though.

It can be helpful if you're not sure if something is selected off-screen or in another view or something.

I'm glad they put that in 2009 in addition to the counts of each object type in the Filter dialog box.
