Default Change family type inside other family

    Hi there!

    I think I'm going nuts on this! ( )

    I've got a family that represents a bolt. That family got 5 family types (M16 - M39)
I've got parameters that change the size of the bolt, and they are working fine. I also got a nut family imported, that works great alone.

The question is. How can i change the nut size inside the bolt family. I've checked the shared check box. Any suggestions how to accomplish this?

You can control the parameters within the nested family.

For example, if you have family A nested into family B.

If you want to change the Length parameter of family A then you would select the family and go to the element properties.

Find the parameter you want to control and click the ellipses button in the right hand column... Now select the parameter (from family B) that will control the value of the Length parameter in family A.

    Hope that Helps

You can, you have to assign a family Type parameter, TO the nested bolt. Not a parameter IN the family, but select the Bolt itself: You'll see the ability to put a parameter on it.

Now, you cant nest a Family Type parameter, so if you put the bolt family in something else, you wont be able to control it, but that shouldnt be an issue.
