    Default Missing Backup files

My company is working in Revit 2009, multiple flavors & all w/ current service packs. When individual disciplines work on independent files, we get 3 backup files, per the default settings. I'm lead to believe that the templates are all correct.

We have 2 large projects that we are working on with central files and multiple users. Surprisingly enough, we have NO backup files to be found. The folders are there, but if you go into File -> Backup, it is blank. If I go into the backup folder itself, there is no numbered .rvt file to be found, only .rws & .dat files.

This was noticed after one of the local files that was linked to the central file got corrupted and we could not rebuild the file using the journal. Several hours of work has been lost & the user is frustrated. It turns out that both central files and the linked local files are not creating backups.

All of the users that have accessed the file all show their default settings are correct.

I am lost on this one, does anyone have any suggestions on where else to look for possible setting corrections OR do we have several faulty installations (which I doubt).

I vaguely remember hearing about another setting location for changing the default number, but cannot find where it is at.

Any help is appreciated on this matter.

The *_backup folder will only contain *.dat and *.rws files and a few other formats sprinkled in. This is correct, when you use the File > Backups function, and browse out and select the _backup folder, Revit should generate a list of time-stamped STC recordings for all users (up to the number specified when you created the Central file, by default this is 10). You can save-out from any one of those date/timestamps to re-create a file that captures the work. This is pulled together from all those *.dat and *.rws files to create a new *.rvt.

Ok on the backup folder contents. The backup procedure must be different for non-central and central files then.

When a user (including myself) goes int the File->Backups function, it is blank, even when clicking the backup folder. The folder does contain the files that you mentioned.

I try this the next time a file goes corrupt.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, this is correct. Once you enter Worksharing, the dynamic changes and the exchange of information in a single save can vary from the infinitesimal (a single *.dat or *.rws) to the entire database, therefore the file management for Worksharing is much more sophisticated than what we're accustomed to with *.001.rvt and *.001.rfa (or even from *.bak's in AutoCAD).

    Sorry about your crash.

    Good luck!

Look under "project rollback" in the help files for information on how to use these files to restore a central file to a previous state.

I'll check into this as soon as I can.

I appreciate the assistance of those that have answered the question. We have recovered one file that is constantly crashing for no apparent reason. I don't know if it is fully recovered or not as of yet, but it hasn't crashed again in the past 12 hours. That's been helpful.

    Thanks again.
