How much of the functionality is removed inthe express versions though? Is it on a par with VB vs. VBA, for example?

Also, seeing as you write in C#, did you take a look at the SharpDevelop that Ed recommended? If so, what were your thoughts? (I have a grand total of nil experience in C code, but I'm going to tackle it soon so this has particular appeal to me but I'd like to hear the thoughts of others who've already used it.)
There are a number of things removed, mostly through templates (I think - didn't get that far into it) and some of the output finishing. I do know that you can't directly write a Windows service application, which was exactly what I was looking for at the time. For almost all uses with AutoCAD, I think the Express editions should be fine.

OK, fair call, and I probably will, too. Thing is that most of my coding these days is done outside of AutoCAD - largely database work which, up until now, has been in VBA but just recently I have hit a major limitation of VBA (memory handling) that I may need to find a way around.

    Thanks for your thoughts, though.

Sorry for taking so long to get back, my Dad's been in the hospital so haven't kept up with the groups here.

I tried SharpDevelop a few years ago. I had numerous crashes, especially when building the project. I've had exactly 1 crash in VS in the 3 years I've been using it. For reasons I don't recall, I also found the VS IDE a bit easier to work in. A friend started out using SharpDevelop due to his thinking that VS wan't able to be used commercially, just as jguest did. Once I showed him that he, in fact, could use it commercially he tried VS. It took a month or so of using both before he dropped the SharpDevelop in favor of VS.

However, it's been quite some time since I looked at SD, perhaps it has improved. No matter which one you choose, have fun learning! Also, you can fairly easily port a project from one to the other at any time if you decide you don't like the one you start with.

I too like VS better. SharpDevelop is ok, there were just little differences that you miss if you're used to working with ms. The main reason I used it was that it didn't require admin priveleges to install on my work pc and the IT dept wouldn't install vs. I later uninstalled it because I didn't want to cause problems with IT. So, until VSTA comes with acad, I'm stuck with vba.

    Hi Bob,

I am directing this at you because if anyone would know you would.

I installed the vba 32 bit enabler and have vanilla AutoCAD and MEP on my machine.

I have installed and uninstalled the enabler several times (and it tells me that it installed successfully) but when I get into AutoCAD and use a VBA command it tells me that it is not installed.

Attached is zip of the the log file.

    Did I miss something?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Peter, and thanks.

I noticed that, although log indicates success, it also complains about disk space. Are you getting tight on space?

    I have a 232 gb drive with 113 used and 119 free.

I don't think that is it.

Do you know where the vba enabler is installed?

    Any other ideas?

Which part? That VBA is not included with 2010, or that you can download and install it separately? Either way, now is the time to start migration. At some point soon, they are sure to pull the plug on the availability all together...
