I'm running 2009 on a new XP machine with plenty of RAM and a certified graphics card. I have a persistent problem where when I point my cursor to a toolbar button for more than about a half a second before pushing the button, it causes AutoCAD to freeze for 10-12 seconds. During the freeze, all AutoCAD activity ceases, while other programs continue to operate normally. After the freeze, AutoCAD operation resumes where it left off.

The problem does not appear to be related to drawing complexity, time since last save, number of drawings open, or which or how many other programs are running. It doesn't happen with the menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.), and it happens whether the toolbar is floating or docked. I'm not sure whether it happens with the ribbon, because I have turned that off, along with all rollover tool tips, the layer palette, and most other new features which might slow things down. It's pretty much an old fashioned layout.

Has anyone seen this? Better yet, does anyone know how to fix it?
