IMO Autodesk has completely dropped the ball with the Ribbon UI. It will now take several years or more to straighten it out while our productivity drops for good. This is not what we signed up for Autodesk. Our firm of 60 seats will not be upgrading mainly becuase of the UI. We think it was a waste of company resources. No one here uses more than one autodesk program and those that use Max don't use cad in our office. We will wait for the next release in 2011 and then if things do not improve we will seriouly consider migrating to another platform that listens to its users.

    Our 2cents

The partners in our firm as already assigned our IT guy to make a report on the other BIM applications. If 2011 is as a worthless as 2010, we will be cancelling our subscriptions. Not that Autodesk or the Factory cares.

Not to sound to pessimistic, but good luck finding that. I spend a lot of time lurking in the ArchiCAD forums and their problems rival ours - and they've been around since the early 90's. Outside of that, I don't see any other viable BIM solution...

Not trying to justify Autodesk's actions or inaction, but the reality of the situation is that we have limited options.

View-Orient to Plane is gone. This was a much used tool.

You can no longer set shortcut keys for viewing different orientations.

You MUST use the VIEW CUBE.

    HIEL VIEW CUBE!
    HEIL AUTODESK!!

lol HEIL... that's the name of a garbage truck company. I used to see the name on the trucks that went down our street when I was a kid, and thought the word looked like "hell" which seemed fitting

    /off-topic aside

It is still there located on the Steering Wheel. See attached image.

Thanks for locating that hidden item....
Why is it on the steering wheel and not the view cube? Seems silly. All the other view orientation controls are on the view cube. Everything else on the wheel is really designed for perspective.

    So now it is :
    Open Sterring Wheel.
Move wheel to where you can see it as it is off screen. (See attached.)
    Chase the little arrow.
    Select Arrow.
    Select Orient to Plane.

    Where it was for me.
PP (Shortcut Key - Pick Plane)

2.5 time more steps (and I'm being generous as I'm counting both P's.). Another increase in productivity.

Agreed, Aaron -- the orient to plane and orient to views must be brought back as keyboard shortcuts -- we're really hampered otherwise. <Picard mode on>Jeff -- make it so!

All this effort for "Insert" and "Manage" could have been accomplished thus (attached). Instead - Autodesk has utterly broken what didn't need fixing and now will have to create yet another time-vampire of a committee to help then "understand" their customers.

Would the next startup that decides to create a BIM tool for the AEC community please download the contents of this forum as an example of how not to treat your customers?

And call me if you need a beta tester. Or a CTO.

I keep pushing friends of mine to do just this. Unfortunatly the group decided to do a startup for the financial industry. Thier designer - ex-adsk - is top notch.
