Default Best Practice for Starting Project in MEP

We are starting a new project, and we are trying to make sure our model is done correctly from the beginning. Is there some kind of website or paper somewhere which covers the best practice to start a project in MEP 2011? i can't seem to find one in my online searching.

Also, and this is kind of tied in to the above, but we are having trouble creating spaces in our MEP model. The Architect's model only has rooms in it, no spaces, so we have been trying to create our own Spaces. I copy/monitored in the Architect's walls and the Space function does not pick up on the walls. Does the Space function only work with walls that are native to the file (i.e. created in MEP or copied and pasted from the Architect)? Or is it possible to create Spaces based on walls in the linked model?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Compliments of Jason Martin at Autodesk.

The architect's model will NOT have spaces, only rooms. Spaces have additional engineering data in them that architects don't need (and I don't think they have the ability to add them with Revit Architecture - I don't have Arch so I can't verify).

Don't copy/monitor the walls. Have a look at the link above. It outlines everything you need to do. It's a great starting point.

So that's Jason Martin's site??? I've been using it as reference for a while now, but couldn't find anything on the site that identified the owner. Thanks Jason, much appreciated!

Mooks, in addition to what Matt said, you have to make sure to turn on the Room Bounding parameter in the Type properties of the Architectural link. That should do the trick

    Yup... that's Jason's doing.

Room-bounding is covered in that web site somewhere.

It is Jason's site but the document was created by a collective group that met via phone once a week to discuss how we implemented Revit. I was apart of the group as well as RevitGarage and Simon just to name a few that I remember.

LOL, it's a small world. I was part of that group as well, but never heard about the results being posted online anywhere other than the Google group site itself. I also don't recall there ever being any "closure" or end to the group. Sadly I was laid off by my previous employer and the group login I used was my ex-employer's email address. Therefore I never got any additional invites or notifications. I tried reaching out to Jason directly after the fact, but never heard back. How did he leave things with you all?

I think we just stopped meeting and all of a sudden I saw this posted which is the google site. Just lost track. I had the same thing happen to me but I have been slowly changing the e-mails to my address instead of my old employers.

does anyone know if lots of grouping in linked Arch model will have any side effect for MEP modeling process? especially for MEP hosting elements like wall / floor / ceiling / etc., and copy / monitor workflow, well, personally i hate grouping except for temporary measure but don't know if it's justified to ask architect to ungroup.

in general, what kind of "clean up" works can we ask architect to do before sending us models, like
    1) remove linked DWGs and related worksets
    2) put elements in proper worksets w/ proper naming especially MEP hosting elements like wall / floor / ceiling / roof / etc. or even create separate worksets for us, for instance, architect usually put all floors / columns / beams / etc. into "structure" workset, but we'll prefer floor as separate workset
    3) review and get rid of warnings
    4) ...

Does it matter in which workset elements in the linked model are put?

One thing I have just started doing is creating a "CADD Imports" workset that has the default visibility set to not visible. Any DWGs that I link or import go here, and then I make that workset visible in the views where I want to see them.
