Default Difficulty editing visiblity of edges on 3D meshes

I've been trying to control the visibility of edges of 3DFace entities. I can use the EDGE command on single 3DFaces. But, when I attempt to use it on a mesh, it doesn't seem to work. Should it?

I know I can explode a mesh, and the use EDGE on each face. But, since exploding a mesh sets every edge to visible, that is a VERY tedious task. Is there another way?

A separate issue I am trying to figure out, is this submission from a student. Somehow, something is set to always show the edges of 3D faces. But, SPLFRAME is set to 0. It shouldn't be showing the edges set to hidden after I do a REGEN. I have attached that drawing, with my notes on it.

Is there any other setting the student could have messed with?
