Default No dwl file being created when opening file

I have a user who's Acad application (2005) is not creating dwl files when opening drawings. As a result, others can open files without any knowledge that it is already open by someone else. They save and close, only to find out later that none of their changes were saved. All users are running 2005...is there something in options, or elsewhere, that tells Acad to create a dwl file?

    Thanks for any help.

AutoCAD no longer uses DWL files for file locking purposes. The DWL file is used only by the WHOHAS.ARX extension, which allows users to ascertain who has a particular DWG file open for editing. The following links may help to clarify:

File locking is handled by the underlying Network Operating system, whether Novell, Unix, or Windows. If a user is opening a file on a server or shared folder, the OS of that server or host machine is handling the status of that file, and should lock it to prevent other user's from opening it read/write simultaneously.

That's ususally pretty reliable, but it sounds like that's where you need to go looking.

AutoCAD still honors the .DWL file as a locking file if one is found, but no longer creates them or manages them as a routine thing. (That was a hack because the original windows for workgroups 3.11 didn't lock files)

Thanks for the info. It appears that the issue is with 1 certain user (so far). Do you know if it could possibly be something in his windows user profile?

Try showing hidden files...I think the DWL files are hidden...

I don't believe that DWL are hidden, if they are _not_ being created by only one user I'd suspect that WhoHas is not being loaded on that machine, but is running on the others.

However, the bigger problem is why open files are not being locked by the OS. I would suggest getting with a networking guru and see if they can identify what's causing that and how to fix it.
