Default Revit MEP vs AutoCAD MEP...

Has anyone have a matrix/pro's and con's/ good and bad, etc...

for Revit MEP vs AutoCAD MEP???

lucky for me the only BIM software i used and love is Revit MEP but my firm is using AutoCAD MEP in our other office location.. and they are so AutoCAD MEP that they are not thinking of using Revit just because, I would like to make a list of both Softwares and compare.. has anyone done this already??

    Thanks!

Depending on where you are, AutoCAD MEP isn't too big a problem...

We had massive problems because almost none of the out of the box content was usable in Australia with our current drafting practices. Our mechanical area had less problems but electrical and plumbing gave up in the end.

Revit content creation is 500X easier than AMEP content creation which for me is the big thing considering that's what occupies most of my modelling time.

It really depends on your usage.

Our company utlize both software package but we are only using AutoCAD MEP as a quick fix and a short term solution (1year ish)

Just some pros and cons I can list from top of my head about AMEP are:

-Buggy, crashes alot when trying to save, 3D render, the engine is very old and unstable for larger projects.

-Conflicts alot with 2D elements, osnap flying everywhere, equipment and objects must all be monitored because all the sudden your 1000000 ducts at right floor level disappears to -4354645 Z position.

-MV parts and making 3D blocks with connectors are ridiculously difficult to make, even simple objects.

-Template, profile, catalogue often conflicts and does wierd things. Especially with other versions of AutoCAD.

-Objects are physically attached but not intelligently attached. i.e duct adjusts to movements but flexi, equipment and tranistion often disconnects when 1 thing is changed. We found this horrible since we had to make 1 changes to a fitting and the entire duct system fell apart and crumbled like a old lego blocks.

-BIM in AMEP...don't even go there.

    Some good stuff:

-Easier to adapt to from plain AutoCAD user
    -Looks better on paper
-Customisable and good if you are a strict my style person.
-Works well with simple 3D solids, extrusions and other AutoCAD modelled 3D objects

If you want to show off pretty renderings of a modeled building on your office wall, or in a portfolio, use Revit. It certainly is good for marketing and allowing a client to even take a virtual tour of their building. However, if you want to produce construction documents that will be passed on to a contractor to perform the actual work on that building, use AutoCad. At this stage, it is much more capable of creating a clear and concise document in less time than Revit. I will agree though, that Revit is much better for creating real content, no question.

I'm finding on this project I'm currently working on it's taking me barely any extra time to create AutoCAD-like documents in Revit than it would in AutoCAD. AMEP was driving me crazy. In the end I refused to use it.
