If you copy the .DST file and .DWG files with fields defined this way, the reference is relative and will always refer to the "current" sheet set.
When you point to "Sheet Set" and then pick a certain sheet set, and sheet, etc. - those references are static and will always point to what you've selected.
If you don't consider the possible consequences, this can be dangerous. I've found fields in a DWG belonging to project "A", referring to sheet set properties for sheet set "XX" (in other words, a totally different sheet set with nothing to do with "A").
This can happen easily with people copying and pasting objects from DWG to DWG.
