You will need to request the SHX file from the other company. Then save it into your FONTS folder.

This is not a font, but rather a shape file. If you do not acquire the correct shape file from the drawing author, then you are going to be missing some objects in the drawing.

You can always set up a substitute that will effectively replace this when you open the drawing.

Not with a shape file, you can't.

Unless you copy an existing shape file and rename it. But then the shapes (if they exist in the copied file) will not be the right ones.

Perhaps I need to clarify, substitute is not quite the right term - I was referring to mapping using FONTMAP. So one could map a SHX Font contained in the drawing to one that actually exists in the system. You could even map it to a TTF font.

Anyway I thought Shape Definition Files had an extension SHP and that SHX are compiled SHP files.

I am assuming the OP is referring to an SHX Font.

The OP is talking about a shape file, not a font file. They both share the SHX file extension, but they are not interchangeable, and you cannot substitute or use FONTMAP with shape files.

Okay I have researched this further and it is quite probable that the OP was talking about a compiled complex linetype shp. This however was neither clear from the OP or indeed from your follow up reply.

Had someone just said it was a compiled complex linetype shape file then that would have been clear from the beginning. Your previous contribution on this merely stated: "This is not a font, but rather a shape file." which was not clear.

It seems to be just a misunderstanding, when we talk about SHX files we should be clear whether we are talking about font SHX or otherwise and follow up comments would help if they referred to shape files as in SHP or compiled shape files as in SHX.
