Delay in selecting objects in 2004

I have a file that we work on in our office, when selecting objects to edit, there is about a six second delay until any selected object highlights or the selection rectangle becomes visible. This only happens in 2004 (the file is saved in 2000 format), we also have 2005 and 2004LT and it works fine in these versions. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can attach the file if needed but it has many xrefs and fonts that go with it.
