Red face Re: RAC2011 -> FBX ->MAX Design 2011 problem

    Found this out this morning:

If you have RPCs in your Revit 2011 model, and then export FBX,
import/link the FBX into 3dsMaxDesign 2011, and no content will show up in the Max scene!

Solution: Go back to Revit, turn off RPCs, re-export FBX, import FBX into Max,
    and it works.

I suspect this may be because you need the RPC plug-in from Archvision for 3dsMax 2011? Not sure of availability.

    cheers

    Thanks, Cliff

    - that's a good one

I've got the RPC plug-in installed which came with 3dsMD2011 but you seem to also need a license for it at $219 this time around.

I don't know if it is of any significance but there are rpc_cc.log files appearing in some Revit folders containing the text 'RPC API' revoke licenses

Yes-- the Archvision RPC plug-in license most likely needs to be valid, or the RPCs will cause the export/import process to fail.

Perhaps Autodesk/Archvision can confirm this? This did not seem to happen in RAC 2010
    and 3dsMaxD 2010.

    cheers......

    On a related problem,

once imported into 3dsMD2011 I now get dozens - over a hundred on some projects - objects listed under the error message
    'Warning:Nested Mesh'

    The description is,
'The plug-in has detected edges that are shared by two or more faces in the same direction.
    the following nodes are affected:'
    .... long list of objects

Would anyone know what this is about?

I've not seen this in 3dsMD2010 imports.

I have the latest FBX plugin for 3ds max design 2011 (2011.2), but max still crashes when I import/ or try to file-link FBX files from revit architecture 2011. Any one know what's happening here?

Also as anyone got a solution for exporting from revit to .obj files? I have tried using the latest FBX converter to convert to .obj and and that also doesn't work. Just if you're wondering, I want to render the revit model in either 3DS MAx design 2011 or octane render thats why I am trying to convert to FBX and .obj. Thanks.

I normally get the same thing, to one degree or another. As it hasn't seemed to affect the functioning of Max Design, I haven't bothered to inspect it too closely.

Before/after installing fbx 2011.2Have you uninstalled fbx 2011.1 via Control Panel->Uninstall programs?

    That fixed my crashes.

I didn't uninstall the .1 version (it's still on my drive), but the .2 version still always fires up without an issue. Also this (which I didn't have the patience to read & comprehend all the way thru...mentioning that it's good practice to keep the old version...just in case...):

    From Autodesk's FBX Help:

When you install the 3ds Max FBX Plug-in two instances of the plug-in are installed on your computer: the actual FBX plug-in that is saved in the source directory (C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2009\stdplugs) and a copy that is stored in the FBX folder that you specified during the installation.

The installation screen that specifies a destination folder

When you uninstall the 3ds Max FBX Plug-in, the process removes only the plug-in copy from the destination folder you specified during the installation. To remove the FBX plug-in completely, you must delete it manually. The reason you must perform a manual deletion is because the FBX plug-in is a part of the default 3ds Max installation.

Essentially, when you uninstall, you remove the contents of the FBX backup folder, for example, C:\Program Files\Autodesk\FBX\FBXPlugins\2011.1\3ds Max 2009 64-bit, as well as any related entries in the Start menu.

It is good practice to keep the previous version of the plug-in, especially if you are working on a project where your workflow is heavily dependent upon the plug-in. If the newer version of the plug-in disrupts your process in some way, you can revert to the previous version. If you do not want to lose access to the FBX plug-in that ships with the 3ds Max software, select Yes when asked if you want to accept saving copies of the old plug-in. This option occurs whenever you install newer versions of the FBX plug-ins.

I was a bit puzzled when installing the fbx 2011.2 as it always asks for a destination folder - as it's the 64 bit version I would have thought it would go in the default location - which is where I pointed it anyway.

Initially I did opt to keep the 2011.1 plug-in and it renames it to .old but eventually manually deleted it, uninstalled it and from then everything worked better - for me at least.
